.n. as the obama administration explanation of the attack in benghazi continues to einvolve this morning. secretary of state hillary clinton suggesting in a gathering of world leaders that the attack was the work of an al qaeda affiliate. the secretary saying this. now with a larger safe haven and increased freedom to maneuver, terrorists are seeking to extend their reach and networks in multiple directions. they're working with other violent extremists to undermined the democratic transitions underway in north africa as we tragically saw in benghazi. that is the first time secretary clinton acknowledged al qaeda as possibly playing a role in that attack. we'll have more on that coming up. a group of senators are now demanding that susan rice, america's ambassador to the u.n., provide more answers what happened in benghazi. new hampshire senator, kelly ayotte one of those four senators who sent a scathing letter to ambassador susan rice, she will be here to tell us first-hand what that is all about. bill: meantime the violence in syria getting worse by the day. a pair of massive explosions rocking

at the consulate in benghazi. secretary of state hillary clinton was scheduled to testify to congress in a closed intelligence briefing today. it's been suggested the u.s. was warned about that attack in libya three days before it happened. the administration insists they haven't seen intelligence about "significant advanced planning" for that attack. but interestingly the white house is now calling the deadly assault on the u.s. consulate in benghazi a terrorist attack for the first time. and it happened on the anniversary of 9/11. fancy that. u.s. relations with israel at least on the surface appear to be getting much worse as president obama continues to say he doesn't have time to meet with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. iran continues to march toward nuclear weapons. syria continues to murder its own people. it all suddenly feels much worse than it has for some time. here's the question, how satisfied are you with u.s. policy in the middle east? go to cnn.com/caffertyfile. post a comment. or go to our post on "the situation room" facebook page. wolf. >> jack, thank you. >>> meanw

answers. on the ground in benghazi investigators can't even get to the scene. nbc's mike viqueira is joining us from the white house with more. good saturday morning to you. >> good morning. >> how big is this reversal? >> it's a very big deal. from the beginning, alex, ever since those attacks on september 11th in benghazi, libya, that left four americans dead, 9 questions not only have been how could this have happened but did the administration shy away, intentionally mislead the american public about the involvement of terrorists, and in particular elements tied to al qaeda. now there are many republicans who say the administration, including the president, specifically said that this was tied to that anti-islam video that played on youtube that sparked demonstrations, make no mistake, worldwide across the region in muslim countries from the middle east all the way to indonesia. and, in fact, the administration spokesman, the president's spokesman jay carney had said that explicitly in the immediate days afterwards. then the explanations began to shift a little bit. susan rice

'll have more detailed. how much has he been weakened by the benghazi attack? >> not hugely, to be honest because he struck, as lois said a dignified tone, the president's response was what you expect from the head of state, from national leader. you know, this is a -- clearly an incredibly messy situation, events were messy, libya has no central government that has effective control over its territory. argue that gadhafi didn't either. in a chaotic situation, it's natural that it takes time for the facts to emerge. you're also talking about a number of different splinter groups at work here. and, by the way, remarkable demonstrations that actually were riots in and of themselves pro-american and anti-militia led to the deaths of some of the militia members, as a result of those attacks. so you know, libya, even under normal conditions, was chaotic and dysfunctional. now, even more so. i don i don't know that you can credibly going into the e debat saying america should withdraw, we have no role in democracy spreading let's just not what you want to hear from a presidential candidate. on

're now saying that the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya, was indeed an organized terrorist attack. the original statement after the september 11 attack was that it was a violent end to a spontaneous protest over an anti-muslim film. but an investigation found evidence to the contrary. that investigation is still going on. >>> president obama spoke with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu over the phone for about 20 minutes yesterday. the white house says the president reaffirmed his commitment to israel's security and agreed they must prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon. the president has been criticized for not meeting with netanyahu in person. netanyahu has expressed frustration with the u.s. for not taking a more aggressive stance on iran. the u.s. instead relying on diplomacy and sanctions. later, mitt romney also spoke to netanyahu by phone. >>> well there are only 38 days left until election day. early voting has already started in a few states and even more kick it up next week. also next week, the first presidential debate. that's on wednesday
